Many factors influence the demand for a local area, or how people feel about their community. Price is always going to be a factor, but the sense of belonging is essential. This goes beyond the individual, it includes families, your friends and even your pets.
In this regard, Bury St Edmunds does a lot well. In 2023, the area was voted the most dog-friendly town in the whole of England. This year, it is looking to take the number one spot for the whole of the United Kingdom.
Girvan in Scotland came out on top last year, leaving Bury St Edmunds to enjoy the silver medal place for the UK, and the satisfaction of being England’s best town for dogs, and their owners.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 21st November.
You might not spend too much time thinking about it, but the dog-friendly nature of an area is a thing that impacts a lot of people. There are more than 12 million dogs in the United Kingdom, and a lot of owners prize their dogs above friends, family members and even themselves.
This means dog owners want to see businesses go the extra mile for their four-legged friend, and to see facilities that make life easier or brighter for them and their pet.
Around 140 businesses in the local area have signed up to a dog-friendly scheme. You might have noticed the blue paw print logo on your travels. This is an immediate sign that shows a business welcomes dogs and their owners.
There is also a new dog-friendly tour in place in the town. If you want to learn more about the local area, you can take your dog with you as you explore the Abbey and the town centre.
Jon Kay was one of the key personnel in setting up the dog friendly scheme in town, and he spoke about the new dog-friendly tour: “I am proud to support the new dog friendly version of the Bury St Edmunds tour, it was such a great idea that I gladly offered my help and advice to ensure its success. This tour is another example of how and why our town is recognised as being so dog friendly. It’s a real collaborative effort that benefits not only dogs and their owners, but also local businesses and Suffolk’s wider tourism economy. I couldn’t think of a more wonderful association for our town and I really hope we go one step further this year and gain the UK title. However, this does require support as it is reliant on public votes, so we are asking if you enjoy and benefit from our Dog Friendly BSE scheme please take a few minutes to register a vote".
Would someone move to Bury St Edmunds just because it has a great reputation for dogs? Some people might, but by itself, it won’t be the only factor that matters. However, as one of the many things a person considers, there is no denying that this sort of thing will make Bury St Edmunds more appealing.
Whether the town has a new accolade to be proud of later this month is one thing, the most important thing is that the town makes improvements and makes life better for all residents.
